I n 2011, the New York Hall of Science (NYSCI) received a grant from the New York Community Bank Foundation in support of NYSCI STEM Connect: Hands-On Anywhere. When NYSCI launched STEM Connect it was with the dual goals of transforming science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education on a national scale and answering the growing demand from educators for a new kind of online professional development. The New York Community Bank Foundation's support provided NYSCI with the resources to understand and address the needs of our local and national educators, and to create online professional development models that exemplify NYSCI's Design/Make/Play approach to STEM teaching and learning. In the past four years, NYSCI has developed 20 programs, reaching educators in 21 states and 3 countries—including Indonesia, Panama, and Canada. As of June 2015, we have reached more than 1,000 teachers.
